Charts

How is chart calculation performed?

The principle of the construction of a hundred of the best tracks is quite simple: in the beginning of each week the radio stations – partners of TopHit.Ru send us the data about the rotation of tracks that were downloaded. We also get detailed information from each station about the quantity of playbacks of the tracks in “programmes by the audience requests”. This information is summarized, fixed at Tuesday midnight and then published as the chart of the last week.

In a month (after the lapse of season) the system calculates the corresponding Airplay Detection TopHit 100.

Of course, the calculations are quite difficult here – when the final calculations are performed, a lot of parameters are taken into account, foe example, where and how many cities are covered by each station, if the station is the regional translator or it broadcasts independently, how the broadcasting stations and their translators are intersected in our data base, how and by whom the play-lists are arranged on each radio station etc. Altogether we take into account up to 20 parameters on each station.

As there are 350 radio stations – users in our data base and up to 300 tracks are available for them simultaneously, the system calculates and analyzes the coming data automatically, it is impossible to process fast all this information manually. Naturally, the rules are equal for all the participants of this project, that’s why Airplay Detection TopHit 100 is impartial and impressive.

What does the ratio “broadcast/orders” for each track in charts mean?

The ratio “broadcast/orders” for each track is the proprietary parameter of TopHit 100 charts. This figure means how many times a week on average a track should be played for the audience to order it at least once. Due to this parameter it is possible to estimate the demand level of a track. Following the changes of this ratio, it is possible to understand the trends of the track perception.

Why do we need charts?

We organized Chart TopHit100 with Your help because it is very important for programme directors and musical editors to know if the track is interesting or not. The summarized information that is reflected weekly for each track is the most important indicator of the broadcasting quality of each song. The information of the TopHit100 chart is widely used by many programme directors in Moscow and other regions of Russia while programming their broadcast. TopHit 100 – is the accurate tool for high-quality broadcast planning. Besides, our charts allow the artists see the results of their activity. In addition, online charts TopHit 100 – is a unique project where the information is complete and impartial, it is integrated from several hundreds of stations and the trends of modern Russian popular music can be analyzed.

«Hot tracks» è «Cold tracks»

How much relevant are new tracks offered to radio stations on the site?

As a rule we are the first or one of the first sites that represent new tracks. For that we work side by side with the largest record-labels. First of all we arrange the tracks of the record companies according to their wishes of song publishing terms. It often depends on the following things: promotion campaign of an artist is being carried out, video is being shot, album is being issued etc. It doesn’t mean that this song cannot be found anywhere else earlier than on our site. The main advantage of getting music on our site is the fact that here You can get relevant rotary tracks that are becoming popular or are going to become hits in the nearest future. That is, our users can be sure that they are in the “centre” of the musical rotation process regardless of the place where radio station broadcast – in Moscow, Blagoveshchensk, Kaliningrad or in Shymkent. Musical directors of CHR, Hot AC radio stations and their variations can be sure that they’ll find 90 – 95% of necessary new music on www.tophit.ru.

There are numbers and letters opposite each track in the column “Parameters” in the sections “Hot tracks” and “Cool tracks”. What do they mean?

As the musical editor or DJ that is on air supposes, each track has several important parameters. Three of them are shown opposite each track in the column “Parameters”. Firstly, it is “intro” time-study, i.e. instrumental song introduction. It is introduction that is used in DJ beat mixing. So, introduction time-study in seconds is the first parameter. Secondly, the whole track time-study is important, this parameter is the next one after “intro”. In particular case, this parameter is important because it allows the presenter to make a break without stopping broadcasting. Latin letters in the end mean how the track is finished. «Ñ» - is «cut», i.e. track is finished abruptly, «F» means «fadå», i.e. the sound volume is falling gradually for 5-10 seconds. The knowledge of the fact how track is finished allows DJ to mix songs better during broadcasting.

What do “stars” mean that are opposite the name of each track in sections “Hot tracks” and “Cool tracks”?

For the songs that are quite a long time on our site “one star” means that a track was at least once among a hundred of the best songs, “two stars” mean that a track was among a hundred of the best songs at least for 4 weeks, “three stars” mean that a track was among twenty best songs for 4 weeks. “Stars” are often given to the tracks that appeared on our site several days ago. We “taught” our system to forecast the possible chart history of a new track. The forecast is performed with the help of a unique model and it takes into account a lot of factors: the quality of the previous tracks of this artist, chart parameters of these tracks, general parameters of a new phonogram, its format, the first reaction of radio stations etc. So, the system of track ranking with the help of “stars” allows the musical editor to define the most popular tracks or the tracks that are likely to become popular in the next two or three weeks literally at first sight.

Why do you offer songs for radio stations selectively but not all new tracks that appear on your site?

There’s much more music then it can be broadcast. When musicians issue an album, it is supposed that just 2-3 tracks from this album will be broadcast. The rest songs are, as a rule, tracks that are interested mainly for admirers of a singer or a group. Here we speak only about artists that are popular enough. If we take into account beginning singers, we’ll get a great deal of musical material that appears daily on the market. This situation allows to pick out only the best music that is a potential hit. Even so, selecting for laying out on the site 25-35 new tracks a week, we understand that one radio station broadcast not more than 5-6 new songs a week. So, the musical editor has always freedom of choosing.

Why do you sometimes arrange tracks that are issued on CD and available on sale?

It takes place when a record-company or an artist decides to issue a single or a particular version of a track. Sometimes several radio stations at once decide to broadcast a published track, and it becomes popular. The important detail is the fact that additional promotion campaigns of such tracks are being carried out, video is being shot etc. Arranging this track on our site, we concentrate the attention of the radio station musical management on it because it is relevant.

«How to work with tophit.ru for singers»

How can artists and record-companies be assured by the site administration that everything is all right during laying out their phonograms?

1. The site TOPHIT.RU administration guarantees that a phonogram will be in the section “Hot tracks” for at least 5 weeks. It means that a new track will be available for all radio stations – partners of TOPHIT.RU during this period of time even if it wouldn’t be among 200 of the most rotated tracks. Generally, a new song can be in the section “delivery” for up to 4-5 months. After all, radio stations make reports according to the track position in the chart. While the song is among 200 best tracks, radio stations that rotate it will send reports.

2. The site TOPHIT.RU administration guarantees to the artists and record-companies that lay out their tracks the access to the specific site section where they can get the detailed statistics of their tracks online.

3. The site TOPHIT.RU administration guaranties to the artists and record-companies that all the radio stations are informed about the legal ways of using all phonograms that are arranged on the site. All the radio stations-partners of the site are familiarized and agree with “Disposition about circumscriptions of the phonogram usage”.

What cannot the site TOPHIT.RU administration guarantee to the artists and record-companies during laying out their phonograms?

The site TOPHIT.RU administration DOESN’T GUARANTEE either the quantity of radio stations that can download track for broadcasting or places in charts of our site. Radio stations – partners of our site make decisions about downloading tracks and rotation of songs from the site THEMSELVES. The system calculates AUTOMATICALLY the information that is got from radio stations. The site administration doesn’t interfere in this process.
